Richmond Highway Widening
The VDOT project to widen Richmond Highway is called the “Richmond Highway Improvements Project.” This project is focused on Richmond Highway from Mt. Vernon Memorial Highway/Jeff Todd Way to Sherwood Hall Lane.
The aim of the project is to:
- Widen Richmond Highway from four to six lanes
- Provide separate bicycle and pedestrian accommodations on both sides of the roadway
- Preserve the median width necessary to accommodate future planned BRT for dedicated bus-only lanes

July 2019
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has approved a road design for Richmond Highway widening to keep the project on schedule. Design items included :
1. Two-way paths for bicycles on both sides of the highway.
2. Construction of the BRT bridges at Little Hunting Creek and Dogue Creek.
3. Install a new traffic light at the US Post Office in Engleside as part of the project.
4. Construction of pedestrian underpasses at Little Hunting Creek and Dogue Creek.

Bus Rapid Transit
Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Phase I will connect Huntington Metro via North Kings Highway and Richmond Highway to Hybla Valley. The BRT lanes will be built in the center of Richmond Highway. Learn more about BRT.
