A proposal to improve Grist Mill Park has recently received community review and the Chamber Board of Directors has also listened to the presentation by Michael White and Mark White, brothers who are both local businesspeople.
It is through public-private partnerships exactly like this proposal, that county park areas can be improved to better serve the community.
Michael and Mark grew up near Grist Mill Park and understand the importance this park has for the community. Their proposal includes:
- Providing permanent restrooms – rather than the two port-a-potties – used by hundreds of families that come to the park for children’s soccer.
- Increase parking in an environmentally friendly way.
- Provide concessions for park visitors
- Renovate the barn to provide a neighborhood restaurant and entertainment venue.
This property is under supervision of the Fairfax County Park Authority with the last Master Plan Update to the park in 2002. This Master Plan says, “Grist Mill Park is approximately 75 acres … It is comprised of a variety of natural habitats in conjunction with intensively developed recreational facilities. These facilities include athletic fields, parking lot, playground, multi-use courts, garden plots, a community mulch distribution area and a barn with a milk house out building.”
After more than 20 years, it’s time for another update to the Master Plan for the park. With this update including renovation of the old barn and turning it into a community-serving restaurant and improving park amenities. This proposal will be welcomed by all families who use the park. It will be a boon for hospitality jobs and strengthen the local economy.
