Q&A with Bennet Helfgott

Tell us about your business.

Mobility City is a durable medical equipment store located in Alexandria. We rent, sell, and repair all types of durable medical equipment, including wheelchairs, scooters, lift chairs, and hospital beds. Our store is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

What inspired you to start your business?

I have been in business my entire life, spending 45 years in the fresh fish industry. That experience taught me the value of hard work and dedication. I wanted to start something of my own and decided to purchase a Mobility City franchise. There are about 50 locations across the country, and I am proud to serve the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area.

Coming from a family of doctors, I felt drawn to a business that could make a real difference in people’s lives. I quickly learned just how many individuals in our community need this type of support. In the six years since opening, I have become not only a business owner but also something of a case manager and social worker. Every day I have the privilege of helping people, providing education, and improving their quality of life.

What sets your business apart from others in your industry?

I personally answer the phone and visit people in their homes. I know my products well and take the time to make sure each customer gets what they truly need. Many in this field sell equipment without fully understanding it. I have been selling since I was 15 years old, and I focus on doing what is right for the customer. My priority is always the safety and well-being of the client, not just making a sale.

What do you love most about the work you do?

I have the opportunity to change lives every single day. When someone who has been struggling to move around gains independence with the right equipment, it makes a huge difference. Seeing the relief and joy on a person’s face when they can move freely again is what motivates me.

Why do you believe it’s important to be involved with the Chamber and the local business community?

I do not get to attend as many Chamber events as I would like, but I really value the opportunity to stay connected with other small business owners in the area. The Chamber helps me gain exposure and introduces me to new people and potential customers. Building those relationships is very important for a small business like mine.

How can other Chamber members support Mobility City of Alexandria?

If you or someone you know has questions about mobility, safety, or durable medical equipment, please reach out to me. I am always happy to offer advice or help someone find the right solution.
